What Motivates Your Taproom Staff?

Your taproom staff have chosen to work at your brewery for a variety of reasons. Once we know those reasons, we can better connect with each team member, but also design unique strategies to best motivate everyone.

I like to break potential motivators down into 3 categories:

  1. Reward
  2. Recognition
  3. Opportunity

Rewards are typically something tangible.

Think extra beer to take home, a gift card to a local restaurant, or extra brewery swag.


Recognition can be as simple as acknowledging a team member for a job well done in front of the rest of the staff.

Recognition could be a gold star on wall or a trophy given at a team meeting. Some people respond best when given the spotlight.


Opportunity is the ability to grow with your taproom.

This may be a beertender who wants the opportunity to further their education through something like the Cicerone Certification Program (or maybe even Taproom Success!). It could be your beertender who has greater goals and wants to someday be your taproom manager assistant, or even climb the ladder with regard to other positions in your company.


Which of these methods are you currently utilizing? Just because your team may be receiving a generous hourly, salary, and/or benefits, doesn't mean that extra little reminders that be meaningful and go a long way.

Take the time to get to better know everyone in your taproom and find ways to get them even more passionate about your brand.
